Software Localization

The Localization Process:

quoteSoftware localization is the process of adapting software for a specific region or language by adding locale-specific components and translating text.

Linguistic differences include pronunciation, spelling conventions and grammatical patterns. It is important for companies to take such differences into account, for example, when creating software for specific regional markets.

Ten steps to a successful software localization project:

1. Your source materials and software content are examined by an experienced localization services engineer.

2. A schedule and budget are developed and agreed upon with the professional project manager assigned to your project.

3. A terminology glossary is defined, including terms or names not to be translated. This step reduces the cost of your localization service.

4. Your source materials are then prepared into a language translation kit with the aim of utilizing those materials with any that have already been translated. The translation kit will also be compiled or published to identify problems before translation.

5. The software is translated utilizing the latest localization and memory tools by a native language team of translators. Depending on the project, testing may be done throughout this stage of the process.

6. Next the documents are translated by expert documentation specialists.

7. Engineering and testing of the software are completed. This step could include resizing the user interface, assigning hot-keys and either compiling or publishing the translated text.

8. A desktop publishing specialist creates screen shots of the new interface for use in "help" and other documentation.

9. Any translated text, desktop publishing, and new graphics are incorporated into the final "help" and documentation.

10. The product then passes through rigorous quality assurance to final delivery.
